The University of Malaga (UMA) is one of the main institutions of higher education in Spain: it is the first of the Spanish universities involved with the SDGs and the number 40 in the world, according to the Impact ranking of Times Higher Education. Since its founding in 1972, UMA has expanded its prestige and international presence and today has more than 35,000 students, 58 Bachelor’s degrees, 53 Master’s degrees and 22 doctoral programs, as well as more than 200 degrees of its own. Its activity is carried out in 2 campuses with almost 2 million m2, in which they teach and research more than 2500 teachers in 23 faculties and schools and in 278 research groups. As a result, more than 200 doctoral theses/year are made, there are 262 active patents (2019), 250 active research projects and more than 1,800 contacts with companies. UMA is also part of the campus of excellence “Andalucía Tech”.
UMA has an important Faculty of Tourism. Created in 1997, which offers official degrees in Tourism Management, Gastronomic Sciences and Hospitality Management, Master’s in Tourism Management and Planning, Master in E-Tourism, and a Doctorate programme in Tourism. More than 20 years of experience guarantee the Faculty of Tourism, which in 2015 was awarded the “Andalusia Tourism Prize”.
By other side, the Faculty of Economics and Business Studies is one of the oldest in Spain, created in 1964. The Faculty of Economics and Business Studies, has, from its beginnings, been at the forefront in economic achievement and contributed to the social and economic development of the area, where tourism is a strategical sector.
The UMA has signed bilateral agreements with more than 1000 higher education institutions around the world that support mobility to more than 1500 incoming and 1100 outgoing students each year, as well as 200 exchanges of incoming and outgoing researchers per year.
The UMA has set a clear focus on the promotion of entrepreneurship, having created a vice-rectorate of social Innovation and Entrepreneurship. It will be the main technical and scientific partner guaranteeing the pedagogical accuracy of the training as well as the necessary coordination and management. The University has a professional guidance center dedicated to promoting the employability of students and young researchers offering a wide portfolio of academic and professional advisory services, internships in companies, scholarships, etc. This department is also responsible for the management of internship of all the official bachelor and master’s degrees of the UMA, through the programme Icaro.
Social concerns are integrated into its strategy through the Vice-Rectorate for Equity and Social Affairs, which works for equity in all university activities and areas. Sustainability oversees the Vice-Rectorate of Smart Campus, whose mission is to ‘make the UMA a benchmark in Sustainability’ with actions such as the Environmental Activities Program, or the ‘Responsible UMA’, which incorporates environmental and social values to training, research and its own management. The UMA has created the FYM Chair of Climate Change, whose objective is to promote the training, research and implementation of mitigating and adaptive measures. For the development of QUEST, the UMA has the most appropriate scientific and technical team from its Faculties of Economic and Business Sciences, Tourism, Commerce and Management.
